Announcing the Nouwen Book Discussion for Lent 2018

If you’re thinking it can’t be time for another Nouwen Online Discussion because that doesn’t happen until Lent – guess what? Lent is almost upon us!  Ash Wednesday is February 14th, just a few weeks away.

I’m sure you will be delighted with our book selection for Lent. It’s Henri Nouwen’s The Road to Daybreak: A Spiritual Journey.

The Road to Daybreak is Nouwen’s intimate diary that records Henri’s journey from the teaching at the most prestigious universities in America to the small community of L’Arche Daybreak on the outskirts of Toronto. For Henri, it was the beginning of a time of deep self-discovery and spiritual renewal. But that’s not to say it was easy.

With simplicity and honesty, Henri describes how the experience changed his attitudes and enriched his spiritual life. He also recounts the struggles and self-doubts he faced along this rocky road to a new vocation as he introduces us to the people of L’Arche and others whose impact on him was profound and life-changing.

Join us beginning Wednesday, February 14th for greetings and introductions, then journey with us through each week of Lent as we read and discuss this very personal and profound journal from Henri Nouwen.

Facilitated by Brynn Lawrence and Ray Glennon, the Lent Online Book Discussion is a wonderful way of nourishing your spirit throughout Lent.

We do hope you can join us. A reading schedule will be posted prior to the commencement of the book discussion.

Don’t have the book? It’s available at most bookstores, or you can order it online by clicking on the Bookstore tab in the menu bar above.

  1. I found this by accident today, Read the reflection every morning, but was unaware of this opportunity. Hope this will now connect me to the daily discussion.

    1. Hi Thomas,

Make sure you come to the “Home” page to see the most recent posts. You can find the Home page by clicking on the word in the bar along the top of the page.

      Looking forward to your participation,

  2. Thank You for offering this study again. I have a collection of Nouwen books and this one sounded familiar. I looked in my book case and found the one published in 1990 complete with all my old scribbling on many of the pages which I had read at that time. Looking forward to new insights.

  3. Looking forward to reflecting on the Road to Daybreak during the 2018 Lenten period. Will the schedule be posted this week?

    1. Hi Daria,
Glad you plan to join us. Yes, the schedule is now posted. You can access it by clicking on the “Lent 2018 Reading Schedule” tab at the bottom of the photo on the main page.

    1. It’s easy, Mary. Brynn and Ray will post the reading schedule and then a number of reflective questions based on each reading section. Just go to the comments link at the bottom of the page, click on it, then read the most recent comments – or add you own in the box at the bottom of that page. You’ll get the hang of it quickly, I’m sure. Looking forward ot having you participate!

  4. Book has arrived. All ready to get started. Hopefully will keep up despite work pressures … and I really mean it this time!!!

    1. Hi Phil,
Terrific. Glad you can join us… and I’m sure the pace will be such that you can keep up and really get something out of this wonderful book (despite the work pressures.)

  5. So, no registration required and we will begin reading the weekend of Friday, Feb. 16th? Looking forward to it. Nouwen has been an influential voice in my own journey, so I look forward to hearing about his journey.

    1. Hi Joshua,
I believe Ray and Brynn will have the reading schedule posted before the 14th so you’ll have an idea of what the first section of the book to be discussed. The actual discussion will begin on Sunday, February 18. Great to have you join us.

  6. This is perfect timing. The topic of our Lenten prayer days at the retreat house where I work is Spiritual Masters , and I’ll be giving a conference on Henri Nouwen on March first. My handout has this site as a resource, so I’ll be sure to mention the book discussion as well.
I lived and worked in a L’Arche community in Iowa from 1999 to 2009 and was fortunate to have Liturgical Press publish my book of L’Arche stories in 2008.
I have Road To Daybreak and hope to join the discussion.

  7. This sounds great, I just ordered 2 books one for self and one for a friend. I plan on joining in on the online discussion.

  8. Is the discussion held at a particular time during the day? I am not yet familiar with doing an online book discussion. Thank you in advance!

    1. Hi Joan,
You can join in at anytime beginning on February 14th. Once Ray and Brynn have a chance to view incoming comments, they will post them. There is always a delay between the time you submit a comment and the time you see it posted on the discussion board. But not to worry – it’s usually within a couple of hours. Brynn and Ray will post a reading schedule and reflective questions to prompt the discussion.
It’s always enjoyable and enriching. Hope you will be able to join us.
      William
