A very warm welcome to each of you. I’m so glad you’ve decided to join us! Our journey together over the next six weeks will surely be full of sharing and deepening. For those of you who are returning, you know how incredible this community is, and for those who are joining us for the first time you will soon discover its blessing.
Let me quickly share how the discussion flows. Each Sunday you will discover a new “post,” indicated by the bold title, on the blog’s Home page. This post will have discussion questions based around the week’s readings (link to reading schedule in the image above). It works best if you always add any new comment to the newest post, even if you are referring to an earlier post. That way, everyone will see your comment. After you submit a comment, either Maureen or I need to “approve” it, so it may take a few hours before it actually appears on the blog page. If you have any further questions about how the blog works, please feel free to ask.
This is the first time we have explored two books at the same time, but they flow so well together we will gain immensely from the combination. While Making All Things New guides us to let our knowledge of Christ descend into our heart and thereby affect our daily lives, Heart Speaks to Heart will invite our awakened hearts to be touched and healed by Jesus.
Over the next few days you are invited to introduce yourself to the group. You may choose to share:

I am a semi retired clinical social worker on Cape Cod. I have participated on one other discussion group on the writings of Henri Nouwen. Looking forward to a prayerful and thoughtful Lent as we learn more together.

Hello. My name is carol and I write from an island in maine. I know of Henri’s work and always find inspiration. First time on any blog. God nudging me in my retirement to giving back to those less fortunate. I seek this lent to be quiet & listen to god and to move forward wherever that takes me.
Let me try this again,,, before we get our next reading and questions. I wrote a post yesterday but I don’t believe it was sent out because of a computer issue that showed up when I tried to post.
I am from the coulees in mid-west Wisconsin about 20 miles form the Mississippi river. This is my first time doing a HN post. I did do an online class of Richard Rohr, called Breathing Under Water and did some posting there… for the most part I am new at this, I have been a fan of HN for a long time, receiving his daily meditations and read his written material. I look forward to learning from you out there as we read and discuses these two books together.

Thank you for the opportunity for so many to share in a Nouwen Lenten experience. It is fascinating to read others who are following Nouwen this Lent. I have read Nouwen’s work for many years but more enthusiastically lately especially “The Return of the Prodigal”, and his recent spiritual formation and discernment books. His gentleness and mystical qualities make him easy to approach and enjoy. I am an Anglican ordained (retired!) deacon living with my wife in Surrey British Columbia. We have a large family of 5 offspring, their spouses and 8 grandchildren, some now adult. I look forward to sharing this journey.
Sue and I had the pleasure of getting to know Henri through John Mogabgab when we lived in Connecticut in the ’80s. We are now living in the Hanover, New Hampshire area and eagerly look forward to participating in this discussion. We are also studying The Return of the Prodigal with our church family, so it will be a blessed Nouwen Lent!
I live in Omaha Nebraska and presently am a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. I have been reading Nouwen works since the 1980’s. I have never done any online discussions other than for my Masters degree. I am interested in growing in God’s love and excited to be a part of this.

Wow, 210 responses and it’s still just Friday! My name is Ray from and I’m Columbia, Maryland (between Baltimore and Washington, just west of I-95). I have participated in the Advent and Lent discussions for at least the past four years – and they are something that I eagerly look forward to each time. For those of you that are joining for the first time, welcome aboard and I’m certain that you will find it rewarding to share your Lenten journey with a spirit-filled group and the words and insight of Henri Nouwen.
I’m married to Dawn and we have seven children between us an three grandsons. My days are spent working for a government contractor in Washington, DC. Much more meaningful, however, is our active involvement in our parish (St. Francis of Assisi, Fulton, MD) where Dawn and I lead a Confirmation small group and we are currently helping to facilitate the showing of Fr. Bob. Barron’s magnificent series Catholicism. I’m leaving tomorrow to help conduct a two day Confirmation retreat with 35 young people. It is in activities such as these that I feel closest to God and that I find great meaning in life.
I have read many of Henri’s books, but neither of the ones that we will be reading together. The Introduction to Making All Things New spoke directly to me. I am certainly one of those “…who experience a persistent urge to enter more deeply into the spiritual life but are confused about the direction in which to go.”

I am from Belper in Derbyshire, UK. I signed up to last year’s Lenten reflection but never really got started – life is sometimes too hectic! I am looking forward to a more successful journey this year. I’ve got both books and a resolution to read in line with the schedule! Whilst my faith in God is sound I am looking forward to deepening my relationship with Jesus; feels like I have grown apart in recent years.

I am glad to join you all on the “journey to Jerusalem”. I am a retired physician who enjoys living in New Hampshire and Arizona and who was never able to fully retire. So now I am about two new vocations: one in my physical life and one in my spiritual life, always struggling to increase my focus on the latter. This is my 2nd Nouwen Lenten book discussion. The readings and sharings encourage me to be a more prayerful person. I enjoyed “The Prodigal Son” last Lent and am looking forward to re-reading these two books. Blessings to all.

I live in Newberg, Oregon and I dedicate my time and energy to Stephanie, Ella Sophia (5), Matea Frances (2) and our soon to be born [son] St. Cyr as well as in full-time ministry to undergraduates at George Fox University… because they all remind me everyday that I am loved no matter what, not for what I can do, but just simply because I belong to them and our Creator.

I am glad to have joined others on this journey. It is my 1st time participating in something like this. I am from upstate NY but am now in Florida where I will be for all of Lent. We are down here every year for Lent and I feel that I compromise my Lent and preparation for Easter due to all the company we have and the activities that are available for us while we are on this 2 month respite from the harsh NY winters. I am looking forward to spending this Lent in the company of others and Henri Nouwen as I deepen my spiritual life.

I’m Barbara and, though not born here, a long time New Englander. I am retired from education where I was at various times a teacher, principal, and coach for teachers.
I still work part time with new teachers hopefully sharing some wisdom from long years in the field. I’ve read several of Nouwen’s books (though not recently) and am a daily reader of the meditations. I have participated in several different book clubs but never online and never with a spiritual focus. I look forward to these weeks of reading and sharing insights.
Henri’s writings have changed how I look at spiritual things. I live in NE Ohio and play the pipe organ at my church.

I have been ministered to by Henri Nouwen for a very long time. My life is always enriched by his insights. This is my first attempt to join a discussion with others online.
My husband and I live in Paducah, Kentucky. We have 5 grown children and 6 grandchildren with another one due in April.
I dedicate my days to doing God’s will. Why, because I want to spend eternity with Him. It is the only thing that makes sense to me.

We are very together in the Lord but so far this is just me trying this for the first time. I purchased”Making all things new” today. Should I get the other one as well? I live in Southern California, married for 25 years!, have 3 children ages 20, 16 and 13. I have read several of Henri’s books and currently receive the daily meditation. I discovered Henri’s books when I experience delayed grief over the loss of my mother at a very young age. I was touched by his ability to write so simply what I was thinking and feeling. His insights brought me hope and deepened my faith. Looking forward to setting aside time to reflect and grow in my spiritual walk…with those who share a common desire!

I am Clarice from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My first encounter on Henri’s books was when I was studying in Canada. The books, ‘The return of the Prodigal Son’ and ‘ The Inner Voice” have accompany me for many years in my spiritual walk especially on one cold winter.
Now I am back in Malaysia and was serving in church ministry doing communication works. But now I am not with any organization and on my own. This season of Lent is to search for clearer direction on what’s next. Wanting and learning to be still and be present.
Looking forward to be part of this! I don’t have the two books with me but I have the Lent & Easter wisdom from Henri Compiled by Judy Bauer with me.
I’ve been receiving the daily devotionals from Henri’s writings for a good many years, and I gratefully stumbled upon his books at least 10 years ago un the Christian book area at Barnes and Noble. His words speak to my heart and soul, and encourage me to go deep. I’ve participated in online studies with Beth Richardson from Alive Now magazine, and am currently participating in Beloved with Jan Richardson because I find so much beauty and truth in her art and prose. I look forward to reading how others respond to Henri’s work and engaging in the conversation when I can. I live in central Ohio and am a second career gifted education teacher in my first year. I love my students and am blessed by their enthusiasm and fresh honesty. I have 2 children in college and one yet in high school. I am also caregiver to my mother who has dementia and lives nearby in a memory care facility. My life often feels like a wild roller coaster ride and I welcome these spaces for respite, reflection and and a means of drawing closer to Christ.

The busyness of my former life has been replaced with a blessed solitude in which I have renewed and deepened my love for the Lord. Hello, I’m Adolfo Pereira. I a Cuban born US Naturalized Citizen since the ‘60s. I came to the USA in 1961 and I have lived in Longwood, Florida for last 18 years. I attend Annunciation Catholic Church. I have 4 children, all grown, (2 married) and one grandchild. This is a first for me and I am looking forward to it.
Greetings Brynn and all of Henri Nouwen’s followers and a Happy Lent ! In Catholic school I probably would have gotten detention for saying that but we have learned a lot with Henri being our “companion on the journey”, and that is what we are called to. Unfortunately, time escapes me and I would say that I have either actively or passively participated in the on line book discussion blog for at least five years. As I already see over 160 comments, it is heartwarming to see how it has grown from a couple of dozen at best. I’ve had the priviledge of meeting “Fr. Henri”, in the Spring of 1995 around Tarrytown, NY where he held a conference but I went for one evening discussion on his new book, “The Return of the Prodigal Son”. When he was in LaArche in Canada, he worked with a relative of mine. I am blessed to have some autographed books and the one that changed me in my thirties was “With Open Hands”, where he wrote such a personal letter with a prayer for the struggle of that time. Also, hee had with him, of loving memory, his travelling companion Bill. I was deeply touched on how Henri, a guru sort by many and highly intellectual, held Bill on equal footing, although Bill was not on his intellectual par, but his love and warmth was more than most. I don’t know if I will be here much, but hope to follow although I am in the midst of trying to digest Solitude by Merton and just bought, “What is the point of being a Christian”, by Timothy Radcliffe. I have read and disected so many of Henri’s books, whom I love dearly. I considered Henri my Spiritual Director for a couple of decades until I finally got one in the year 2003, and when he moved I took my time and God found me another in 2010, and coincidentally, they both love and quote Nouwen to me. I remember when I was given a paper to read as he printed it off his computer, I immediately said, “This is Nouwen’s voice of love, isn’t it” (close enough), and Henri has helped me hear Jesus’s INNER voice of love. Henri was the real deal and I am so happy to see that his Spirituality is still alive and growing. God Bless You All. – Rose
Greetings! I live in Roswell, Ga, just outside Atlanta. I’m looking forward to joining all of you on this Lenten journey and is the first time I’ve participated in a reflection group of this kind. I am a United Methodist pastor currently on sabbatical and, after decades of sheer busyness, am enjoying having the time to nurture my family (including our 9-month-old grandson-such a joy!!!!), friends and self. This Lenten study is the perfect time to continue to grow in spiritual discipline and, as Nouwen says, “to enter more deeply into the spiritual life.” Blessings…..

I’m Marlo, and I’ve been receiving the daily meditations by Henri Nouwen for the last two years. I look forward to them in my inbox every morning, as they help begin each day with a warm touch of love and spiritual coziness in my heart. 🙂 I am the owner of a frozen yogurt bar chain and an active member of St.Andrew’s Anglican Church in central North Carolina. I grew up Southern Baptist and did not become a part of the Anglican church until about 8 years ago. My family did not observe the Lenten Season during my growing up years and so it was new to me as I transitioned to the liturgical church … but it has become such a rich, rich part of my life now – I want to explore it as much as possible. As I posted on my FB wall yesterday – Lent helps me forget about myself altogether … and it’s through the forgetting, that I remember what matters most. I hope I can be an active follower of this blog throughout the coming days! So excited about it!

I live in the Atlanta area and spend my time learning more about surrender and vocation in my role as wife and mother to an almost 2 year old boy. I also teach 3rd grade for a homeschool program one day a week.
I resonated with what another person wrote that they live in unexplainable fear. I would add to that struggle in finding God in the mundane-ness of my life. I was so glad to find this online book group. I have loved Henri Nouwen’s writings for years and would call him a great spiritual mentor to me. He can put into words exactly what I feel but didn’t know how to say. I believe his writings have been my saving grace in what it means to be a Christian. I long for the joy and peace of Jesus but have been so clouded by religiousity and the things of God rather than knowing God himself. I am in a time of really questioning what it means to know and be loved by God, what it means to truly be a Christian. Often I don’t feel any different because of it.
As another person said, I am a bit overwhelmed by the amount of posts and I am afraid I will spend much of my time reading what others said rather than diving into it with the Lord–so I am going to have to be disciplined there!

I have been so blessed through Henri’s work since I’ve known Christ – but over time, the busyness of every day life has taken me away from deep thought and prayer. I have been thirsty for the closeness with Christ that I’ve experienced in the past and reading Henri’s work will help me to take a breath and be with Him. Along with our reading here, I am spending Lent reading through only Christ’s words in Scripture – using many diferent translations.
This is my first time participating in an online book discussion … May we all fall more deeply in Love (with Christ!) during this season!

I live in Phoenix, AZ and have for years–although my heart is often nearer the ocean than the desert. Still, this is our beautiful time of the year with blooming cacti and lovely days in the 70’s and 80’s. I am a psychotherapist professionally but in discernment to studying to be a spiritual director.
Henri’s work and gifts to us through his writings have been meaningful to me previously and remain so presently. I’ve not read these 2 books previously but have been immediately touched by the intro of Making All Things New. Particularly in the last paragraph where we are called to “confess our own homeless and worrying existence”. Indeed worry and if’s are part of the spiritual battle I fight daily…and hope to turn over in a deeper way in the next 40 days.
I look forward to this journey, my second through the Nouwen Society, with all of you.

My name is Lata; I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the East coast of Canada. I am originally from India, but I have been away from India for 49 year almost. I am a palliative care Volunteer in a local hospital for the war Veterans, and my husband and I are involved with the local L’Arche homes and actively working for the establishment of another home on the peninsula Halifax. The first thing I read in the morning is Henri Nouwen and I go to sleep after reading something else from another book. These two books will be my devotionals for this Lent. I am Diana. I found Nouen’s writings as a wonderful guide through Lent two years ago, after picking up the small booklet “Renewed for Life.” I am a retired teacher with four grown children strung across the world. I have a registered therapy dog who I accompany in visiting nursing and retirement homes, hospitals, and in schools as a Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.) Gracie attends church with me. It is amazing how many openings her presence creates in speaking to others about their life situations. I love these writings. I need to strengthen my connection to God’s love. I hope to be a channel of that love to others.
I forgot to mention that I live in the Panhandle of Texas in the lovely small town of Canadian (not Canada!), Texas! I love seeing that there are participants from such diverse places. I feel blessed already.

I’m Sharon and my husband and I live in suburb of Detroit, Michigan. My Stephens Ministries training introduced me to Henri Nouwen’s books. I have been particularly inspired by his writing about life he has shared with vulnerable people and always take away quite a lot of wisdom and strengthening of my faith when reading his thoughts and relationship to God. Good Morning! Less than two years ago, along with my husband, I moved to the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia. Adjusting to life in a very rural area has been considerable for me. Prior to this time, I lived 64 years in a metropolitan area. My little church family is only 30 STRONG and very sweet but not given to in depth study. I miss studying the Word & wonderful supporting literature with a group of friends. This Lent season THIS venue will serve that purpose for me. My husband and I and our two adult children and their families live in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, where we are hoping the bitterly cold temperatures and monstrous snow banks will disappear soon! Although NB is my adopted province, I grew up in Toronto and a short distance from the l’Arche community where Henri Nouwen lived. I have read many of Nouwen’s writings and they have had a profound influence on my life and relationship with the Lord. Thanks for providing this forum for discussion and reflection.
Hello, my name is Mary and I live in Chicago. I am an avid reader and student of Henri Nouwen. My vocation is serving single/pregnant mothers and their children, to reorder their lives with the understanding of how much our Lord loves them. Once we know of the Lord’s love, we can only align our will to HIS. We live in community, and learn to become vulnerable and care for each other. We heal from past wounds, live in the present moment and prepare for the future.
I am excited to learn from this new community as we share the insights and reflections of the reading of “Heart Speaks to Heart” and” Making All Things New”.
Greetings from Colorado. This is my second book discussion. I was introduced to Henri Nouwen’s writings 3 years ago. The first Henri Nouwen book I read is “Show Me the Way” Daily Lenten readings. I now use this as a daily reading during Lent. Today’s prayer for the Thursday after Ash Wednesday reading:
“O God, you are not far from any of us,
since it is in you that we live,
and move, and exist,
You, who have overlooked the times of ignorance,
let everyone everywhere be told
that they must now repent”

I have loved Henri Nouwen’ s writings for many years and look forward to listening and hearing God speak though each one of you. In Nouwen’s Ash Wednesday prayer, he speaks of being “divided,” torn between the voices of the world and the voice of God. I confess that “divided” is also where I find myself at the beginning if Lent. Throughout these forty days, it is my prayer that together we may become more and more attentive to the voice which calls us to choose the “narrow road to life.”

I am a little late, it appears, but I think that this will be a wonderful devotion to follow for the Lenten season. I am a long-time Christian, an ordained minister (Baptist! And in the SOUTH!) Nouwen indeed possesses an ability to teach a truly deep, life and heart altering view of the Christian way, which is what “the walk” is all about! I look forward to participating in the dialogue! Are we allowed to “go twice”??? Well ok I will be the first to go twice. In my introduction I had not yet read (re-read) Henri’s introduction but now I have so here is my “dive in” with comments: (sorry kinda long!!)
On Page 14 Henri says “I have written this book for… men and women who experience a persistent urge to enter more deeply into the spiritual life but are confused about the direction in which to go.”
I certainly have that persistent urge, but I feel like I am not “confused about the direction.” Rather I am resistant to giving up an arena in which I have found a kind of reknown, albeit as a big fish in a small pond. I find myself yearning for the existence I tend to have in Ocean Grove, where I leave this “still-present-but-wanting-to-be-done-with” life behind and enter into a life of new writing, an older, walkable community, and art. So now to be reading yet another of Henri’s books and journaling about what it brings up in me is a happy comforting thing.
“To whom or what you dedicate your days and energy, and why” – It is difficult for me to answer this because I am not dedicating my days and energy where I want/and where I feel God is nudging me. Since 2010 much of my energy went into the book that was just published. I had thought my work/contributing in this area would be “done” but now I find myself working on a FB page, a Website, considering joining the Board of an organization, all focused on “making life better for deaf and hard of hearing school children” (which is part of the title of the new book). While this is certainly a worthy cause it is one I have become weary of. I long to move onto another book which will be more about spiritual seeking and nothing to do with deafness, at least not the physical kind (smile). And I also have a stirring to do artwork, and simply do not give this stirring very much time and that makes me feel sad.
Finally, this is my second online book discussion but the first with the Henri Nouwen Society.
Hi my name is Sue and I am from Georgia in the Atlanta area. This is my first following of a Nouwen book study. I have read his books for many years and they always feel like a ‘blanket’ of love and hope to me. My husband pastored for 34 years and then we moved here to start a ministry to help those wounded, but particularly those in ministry. We love pouring out our lives to them, especially to pastors and families. We built a space downstairs we call the Oasis, so they can come for free and get rest, read ,(we have a lot of Henri’s books in our library) and also make ourselves available to listen to those who want counsel. I am a health coach and work particularly with a person becoming ‘whole’ in body, soul, and spirit. Lately I’ve been listening to Inner Voice of Love by Henri and it deeply ministers to me. It is what I am hoping to get to the ‘root’ of with each client. So I deeply appreciate all of the books he’s written.
Thank you for this opportunity to grow more. This Lenten season I just want to be more ‘awake’ to the Inner Voice of Love, and then, when appropriate, pour that out to others. But I have to fill up first 🙂

Blessings in the name of Jesus! I live in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. Our church is using the Called to Life, Called to Love Lenten reflections by Nouwen. I find that when I meditate on the word alone I see only one view; mine. During this time when Jesus continued to teach and pray with others I know that I need the voice of other’s interpretations and experiences to join with mine to make a deeper, richer, meditative prayer life.
I am Dottie from Waretown, NJ. The book discussion of Advent 2013 was the highlight of the season, and so I am happy to be part of this community for Lent.
A retired English teacher, I now spend my days as a freelance writer for my diocesan newspaper. My work also appears in three books of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. My husband Joe (who does not do book discussions) and I are active in our parish’s music ministry, and I also proclaim the readings and am a Vincentian. Joe and I have been blessed with three grandchildren. With great joy we sit for once or twice weekly for the girl and boy twins age two and a half. Henri’s books have always spoken deeply to my heart, and I need him this Lent as my spiritual journey has taken a detour. Last night Henri’s words about speaking to Jesus’ heart resonated with me, capping off a holy day in which I was returning to God. I am excited to read everyone’s comments (reminds me of the first Pentecost!) and to be part of this community.
This is a new experience for me, but i am excited to begin this journey. I am a newly retired Catholic school teacher, mother of 5 and grandmoather of 14. I have been involved with church all of my life, but am desperate to form a personal relationship with my God. I need to move my faith from my head to my heart. I have read many of Nouwen’s books and am excited to share thoughts on these books durig Lent. May God bless us with his grace to further our love of him and his people.

Good Morning, I am joining the Lenten discussion. I am a “recovering pastor” and I currently work as an assistant administrator at a skilled nursing facility. Henri has been a wonderful companion since my early 20’s and has brought so much hope and healing into my life and, by default, into the lives of those with whom I’ve ministered to over the years. Through the Inner Voice of Love I began to first hear and to be healed by that Inner Voice. I am seeking to go deeper in my spiritual life and walk at a time when I feel somewhat disconnected certainly from the church and, in part, from God. And so I choose to humbly walk beside you all on this precious Lenten journey. Thank you for this gift. – Michael
Greetings from SE Michigan. I work in a large health ministry so I spend my days in healing environments and places of sickness. I was raised Catholic, still practice but I tend more towards the pastoral rather than church. I got turned on to Henri Nowen’s writings from quotes in non-Catholic spiritual writings by 3 different authors that I read within a few weeks of each other…at that point I was not only moved but also curious about Henri Nouwen and the rest is history. I enjoy book clubs but with work & other schedules it’s challenging to attend in person. This is my first online book club. What a great idea with these beautiful books. Out of Solitude was my first introduction to Henri Nouwen and I have read most of his published work over the years but it has been a while. Glad to be back.

I am now feeling a bit overwhelmed by the large number of responses so far. I fear that I may end up spending too much of my Lenten reflection time chat hung up on people’s posts. Hello, my name is Daniel. I’m an Australian living and serving as a Salvation Army officer (minister) along with my wife in Japan. I was introduced to Henri Nouwen’s “The Wounded Healer” by a mentor a number of years ago and resonated with his particular writing style. This is my second reading experience in this way; I’m not so interested in what I could or should ‘give up’ for Lent as I am in what I can bring to my relationship with God at this point in the journey. I’m from Charlotte, NC. I Haven’t been able to find a good spiritual ‘fit’ for awhile now but have always loved Henri Nouwen. I recently discovered the emailed daily meditations, which have been wonderful for me. This is my first experience here, and what I want is to renew my spiritual “groundedness”. I am from Jackson mississippi. I had an opportunity to meet Henri Nouwen in the early 1990’s before the Persian Gulf War. He participated in anti war demonstration and March in Washington DC . I was an intern with the sojourners community and helped coordinate the March. He got a bit confused about our route and I was able to steer him in the right direction. We studied Jean Vanier,s book Community and Grace while living in community. Jean Vanier started the Larche communities where Nouwen spent his last years. I had the opportunity in D. C. to spend time at a Larche community. I currently act as an Educational Advocate for Children in foster care throughout the state. I have never participated in a blog or book study such as this but I have been following the meditations for many years.

Just returning from Ash Wed service. Feeling very receptive to the invitation for inclusive prayer as I learn to yield into this Lenten season. Lots going on, joys and sorrows. Attuned to listening and encouraged already to let go and abide in the silence but it is so easy to be distracted. Quiet me Lord as I pray to open my heart and hear your voice.
Almost 7 years ago, I was doing some research at a summer camp for deaf children in Michigan. My husband of 15 years had died suddenly a few weeks before this. There was a small library and there I found a very old, used copy of “Making All Things New” and the priest in residence there told me “take it.” So I took it and have read it numerous times. Some years later I bought the “Seeds of Hope: A Henri Nouwen Reader” and from that book I learned about “The Road to Daybreak” which then touched me so very very deeply. In the summer of 2012 I spent three months in Ocean Grove, N.J. reading this “diary” and then I journaling about what it brought up in me. I loved his telling of his struggles in trying to decide if he would go to the L’Arche community. I would often say to myself “gee, he sounds just like me!”
I am a published author and both of my two books are about the lives of deaf and hard of hearing children. I am one of those, grown up (smiles). I have been a “believer” all my life, growing up Catholic but found a “community church” about 20 years ago and remain a person who is very “God-focused” relatively speaking you might say. Oh, and I live in the Washington, D. C. area, in nearby Maryland. But I grew up in Ct, also very near NYC.
Anyway I am so excited and feel so blessed to be in a community of people who have been touched by the life of Henri Nouwen. Just warms my heart. Yeh!!!
I’m from Indiana and this is the first time I have participated in an on-line book discussion. Someone mentioned that the song Ashes was sung today for their Ash Wednesday Mass. This was also sung at our church and the words “We rise again from ashes, from the good we’ve failed to do. We rise again from ashes, to create ourselves anew. If all our world is ashes, then must our lives be true, an offering of ashes, an offering to you,” also touched me. These words are very much full of hope for all of us in this world. We are not alone in our journey as we seek to come closer to God and do His will.

I just finished reading the intro of making all things new…I exhaled and felt hope and a bit free ….help is on its way to show me that worrying is not consistent with scripture..so let’s go lent 2014. With ashes still on our foreheads I look forward to learning and letting go of future worries.

The phrase “return to me” from the first reading in the Ash Wednesday liturgy remains with me. I am trying to recognize more that Lent, and the entirety of life, is response to God’s ongoing invitation, “return to me.” God invites, supports and sustains. Blessings and peace to all.

Hello all~ I live in Salem Ma with my husband of 47 years. We have four children and eight grandchildren. We are both retired educators. I am a member of the Paulist Center in Boston. I was recently introduced to Henri Nouwen in an interfaith group in my home community. One of the members shared a reflection on Solitude from the daily meditations. I was instantly hooked and have added the daily meditations to my prayer routine. So often the threads from my other teachers, Father Richard Rohr and the Jesuit Fathers at Loyala Three Minute Retreat blend so beautifully with Fr. Nouwen’s words that I feel I am actually on the right track, going in the right direction at exactly this right moment in my life.

We reside in Kaneohe, HI and are members (and deacons) of First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu at Koolau (FPC). I just learned about Henri Nouwen during a 4-week evening course at FPC regarding the parables of Luke 15.
I dedicate my days and energy to my wife (of over 31 years) Marianne, our dog Koele, and learning to walk with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I always need help with all three of these!

Hello from NE Oklahoma. I’m new to this area coming from an active urban lifestyle in the Midwest to untouched prairie. My days are now spent as caregiver and sole companion to my 102 year old Mother who is almost completely deaf. Using this as an opportunity for reflection and study, I sometimes feel like a cloistered monastic who has taken a vow of silence. I am so happy to be joining this book discussion group and the worldwide community of Henri Nouwen followers and readers of his awesome books!!! The first book I ever read of his several years back was the one titled “Can You Drink The Cup?” I have read that book several times and referred to it often. The other book that I love is the one titled “Inner Voice of Love”. I shared it with my grown daughter several years ago and she loved it too. She has her own copy now.
I live in a little town east of Houston, TX called Beaumont. I’ve lived around here all my life. I have been married to my wonderful husband for almost 37 years now. We have two grown children (Chad & Lisa) and 2 grandsons and 2 cats! I have been “retired” for the past 3 yrs. My husband is retiring at the end of this year. Previous to my “retiring” I’ve mostly done office work, although I do have a cosmetologist license and have also worked in a salon at times. My husband & I are both cradle Catholics and are both active in our parish at St Jude Thaddeus. I am also a singer and have sung with our church choir for almost 30 years.
This is my first time to do a book study and I am looking forward to interacting with everyone.
I have completed Making All Things New and passed it on to a friend. It spoke to me about my need for discipline, the setting aside of time to “listen”. I am a snowbird in FL with lots of time that simply zips on by! Looking forward to journeying with you all.

My name is Will, and l live with my life-partner/husband, Jim in New York City, specifically on the Upper Westside of Manhattan. I work as a psychiatric nurse on an in-patient unit here in Manhattan. I have been a nurse for the past 27 years and truly enjoy the patient contact. I am quick to admit, though, that my energy reserve is not as good as it used to be; I come home most evenings drained. This is my first book club discussion group.

Most of my other book discussions have been in small prayer groups. I am currently a spiritual director-in-formation and thought this would be a great way to enrich my studies.
I have become familiar with Fr. Nouwen’s writings and find them fairly easy to read with lots of things to ponder on.

I have thought of wanting to give certain for fast and prayer. I want to be focus on Jesus and his wisdom so that I will be renewal of my spirit. I am being confronted with culture and society that has no rooted of Christianity foundation. People are living in fear, uncertainty, hopelessness, helplessness, and spiritual bondage and poverty. I need every day renewal of mind and spirit. Also, I want to be focused on calling as a missionary from California to serve in my birth country. I hope to get encouraged by other participants. I’m a writer and a pediatrician now working with SCOPE, a non-profit that is a partnership between the University of WA Dept. of Global Health and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, working to improve prenatal care, HIV testing and HIV treatment of mothers and babies in northern Ethiopia. I have loved Henri Nouwen’s work for many years but have never participated in this discussion group. I live in Troy, NY. My husband and I are empty-nesters. I spend my days as a graphic designer and writer and mom to two canine children.This will be a new journey for me with this community. My life has been overwhelming, chaotic and painful for a long time. A friend and I decided to “do Lent” together although we are just beginning to figure out what that looks like. I love Henri’s writings. They touch my heart and help me with the difficult questions faith presents. I’m hoping that spending this season participating in this will help me go deeper in my faith.

I understand Henri was a bit of a neurotic mess… and I can totally relate to that. I find so much hope and comfort in knowing God used Henri is such an amazing way… maybe there’s that possibility for me too.
I spend my days as working a graphic designer… and pondering why… and if I want to continue on that path. I’m 45 and the design and marketing world is changing. I am struggling to feel very much like I’m the Beloved, but I have hope! Always hope! Working and opening to find the peace and “newness” I hear is possible through THE Creator’s definition of me, not the world’s definition.

I’m sad because my books haven’t arrived yet but I’ll be happy reading your posts and learning from them. At this point of my life I’m enjoying my 3 teenagers focusing on my family and participating in my parrish as a Minister of Holy Communion. Many years ago, I had the opportunity to attend an ecumenical Lenten series led by Fr. Henri Nouwen at St. Paul Church in Cambridge, MA. This was a life changing experience for me. Henri Nouwen frequently was the presider at the Sunday Mass I attended. He was kind, loving, compassionate, all-inclusive, passionate, and a vibrant spiritual leader. Hi…my name is Kathy and I live in South Orange County, California. I’ve been reading and reflecting on Henri’s books since 1996 when I was introduced to “Here and Now”. This Lenten journey you are leading comes at a good time in that I have embarked on a sabbatical for this first quarter of 2014 after 4 years of “physical & emotional exhaustion” (as Henri describes his condition in the prologue of Heart to Heart). I have dedicated it to rest, re-focus, reflection and re-centering. Finding it a bit challenging but being as intentional as I can, Henri’s words always help as a guide for me in my spiritual pursuit of knowing Jesus more.

My name is Dean Hockenberry and I live in a small town on the edge of the DFW metroplex in North Texas. I am excited to spend this season with all of you. I am part of my churches freedom and care ministry. We are asking the team to be a part of the this group so I hope to walk this journey with my brothers and sisters as well. Our true identity in Christ is easily clouded by our fast paced day to day activities. Henri Nouwen has often helped me refocus on what is important as I learn and grow. While Lent has traditionally been a solemn and somber season leading up to Resurrection Sunday, this year feels more like a second Advent filled with anticipation of what is to come.

I have only very recently learned of Henri Nouwen’s writings, and am currently reading “Making All Things New”. The book is being read by women in my church (I am a Christian in a United Methodist congregation) as part of a retreat on spiritual renewal that will take place in late March.
My days — and certainly my energies — are spent serving the informational, academic, and spiritual needs of my Christian school community. (I am a librarian/media specialist!) My evenings, weekends, and holidays are spent with my sweet husband and our three Chihuahuas. We are both active in our church and in local outreach missions. While all of my work is rewarding, I found Nouwen’s words reaching out to me as he was explaining the purpose of this book:
“…to be of help to those who feel filled but unfulfilled…”
Curious to know more about the author before launching into his writings, I found the Henri Nouwen website and, subsequently, this forum. This is my first time participating in an online group discussion.
My hope is to learn more about living a deeper and richer spiritual life. I think the Lenten season is a perfect opportunity to pursue this spiritual endeavor, and I look forward to your posts and contributing to our discussions.

This is my first on-line book discussion group. Hopefully I will be able to keep up as I want to engage in something special for this Lenten season. I’m a college professor who teaches full time and am blessed with a retired husband and three adorable grandchildren. My days get very filled and I need to slow down and spend time learning more about what God would want me to do in my life. I’m looking forward to this Lenten journey.
I forgot to mention that I am from a small university town in Idaho. My husband and I just recently moved from the home that we lived in for 23 years to a much smaller home – we are empty nesters. Having to downsize has been quite a process; we are not through all are stuff yet!
Last night we attended Lenten services at church and left with ashes on our foreheads. Our pastor set a wonderful tone to help us begin our Lenten journey.

I have never joined a Henri Nouwen discussion group, but I was thinking that I might this year, because I love Henri Nouwen’s books and am excited about the opportunity to invite God’s renewal with a community during Lent. I live in Southern California. I am currently in this discernment period of who and how to pour my heart and time into most among threads of life I’m trying to faithfully continue in with God: inviting renewal in my relationship with Jesus and my husband, investing my life in women and small groups at my church, exploring ways to raise awareness and advocate for girls and women at risk for trafficking, considering how to be a catalyst for missional churches and member care for missionaries, and inviting God to continually clarify my calling as a woman in the church and in the world. We’ll see how the Lord holds all of these together and leads me in this season. Glad to join you!

Hello to all. I am retired, living in Arkansas, though I spent most of my years in California. With the retirement and the move I have slowed down from much of the busyness that working for a large corporation and family responsibilities entailed. I live with my son and help in caring for his two children and have been spending a lot of time just reconnecting with the Lord whom, in my busyness, I neglected or ignored for many years.
I participated in the Advent discussion of “Life of the Beloved” and was blessed with the insights of the group. The thoughtful comments and questions opened up the beautiful message of that book for me. I am looking forward to joining with those here to delve into more of the inspired writings of Henri Nouwen. I’ve come to regard him as a great spiritual role model and teacher, and I’m looking forward to this Lenten journey.

Hello everyone! I live in Seattle, WA. I work in the international development field for a large Christian non-profit. I’ve loved Henri Nouwen’s work since I was in college over a decade ago, but this is my first book discussion. 🙂
Today is Ash Wednesday and I feel so blessed to be taking part in this Lenten discussion for the first time. However, I am no stranger to Henri Nouwen’s books…I often credit Life of the Beloved as being instrumental in saving my life:
“The truth, even though I cannot feel it right now, is that I am the chosen child of God, precious in God’s eyes, called the Beloved from all eternity, and held safe in an everlasting belief.”
I look forward to being with you during this sacred time. California is my home, I spend my days working as a learning specialist with teenagers and with my 91 year old father who is currently in hospice.
I am a Spiritual Director of 30years and still fully involved in that ministry. In those 30 years, our 5 children have married and shared with us 12 grandchildren–a full life indeed.
I love the way that Henri could acknowledge to Madame Vanier his lack of passion for writing about the Sacred Heart. Even in that he remained open, never “forgetting” as she cautioned him.
This is a perfect example of a teaching that brought great freedom to me personally. I think it is contained in “Return of the Prodigal” where he says (paraphrased):”We so often think that it is us who pursues God, when actually He is constantly pursuing us. Our only response to this pursuit is to allow ourselves to be found by God.”
Henri perfectly exampled this as he didn’t try to “manufacture” what was not given yet for his heart experience. He waited for the Spirit of God to move the unique way that spoke to his heart then he acted upon the Spirit’s movement. Deep intimate conversation was the result, communion with Jesus.
When those two books were published so many years ago, they were a “saving grace” for my spirit. Looking forward to being renewed again…thank you

I’ve participated in this blog before and am always grateful that it is a tool that helps me slow my life down and concentrate on the main things. I dedicate my days and energy to my paid work as a Clinical Educator and the rest of the time I’m in the sandwich generation helping my parents who live in their home – my Dad with Alzheimers Disease and Mom the caregiver for him. I have a teen at home and 2 young adults physically out of the nest. I am a muscian at our church and I play French Horn.
Why I spend my time this way – my nursing is my vocation, my calling. looking after family, well, you just do it. the other things are what keep me balanced, healthy and refreshed.

As I read your blog posting, I couldn’t help relate to your ‘sandwich generation’ comment. Although my folks are in relatively good health at 94 and 90, I seem to be juggling my time with them and as well as five grandkids who also live nearby. In my ‘space time’ I’m a part-time instructor at the university in our city. So the sandwich squeeze is felt often. Indeed, maintaining focus on my relationship with the Lord is the only way I maintain some kind of balance although some days I feel quite ‘imbalanced’.

Just google it. I also wanted to see it. It has the very stiff and stylized appearance of icons, but it conveys the deep love between the figures, I think.

I live in Hertfordshire in the UK. I have read many of Henri Nouwen’s books and I look forward to learning things from the other members of this reading group. I have not participated in such a project before. I only have a copy of one of the books so far (Heart speaks to heart) but the other one is on order. I suppose everyone knows that John Henry Newman chose ‘Heart speaks to heart’ as the motto for his coat of arms when he became a Cardinal. In this diocese we are very excited to have our own new Cardinal, Vincent, who was appointed a few days ago. I discovered that his motto is ‘Love is strong as death’ which I think Henri would have approved of.

This is also my first time to the book study. I have cousins that live right outside of Richmond over in a town called Mechanicsvile. It’s been a while since my husband and I have been there. My cousin’s parents live down in Colonial Heights. It’s a great place to go visit my relatives and also get to see Washington DC.
I am Linda from snowy Minnesota. This is my first online book discussion group, although I have participated in women’s Bible studies at my church. I am a writer, mostly books and articles around cancer care. I have facilitated a weekly support group for women with Stage IV or recurrent cancer for the last 15 years at a local hospital. Besides motherhood, this has been my most rewarding and inspirational life activity. My favorite Biblical passage is “I believe; help my unbelief.” As Nouwen said today in his Ash Wednesday meditation, I must refocus every day or I lose my way. I look forward to this six weeks of sharing with all of you.
I am Cheryl in Florida. A wet, rainy Florida today. My first time here and I look forward to this experience. I am unemployed and searching for a job but am extremely grateful that I have this time to be fully committed to my Lenten journey. I recently read a book that referred to Lent as the “bright sadness.” I feel that sadness as I reflect on how often I have failed my Lord. This Lent will be my love letter to God as I find Him through my abandonment of self-love and put my trust in Him. This morning at Mass we sang the song Ashes. The first verse says, “We rise again from ashes, from the good we’ve failed to do. We rise again from ashes, to create ourselves anew. If all our world is ashes, then must our lives be true, an offering of ashes, an offering to you.” Yet, without His power, I cannot create myself anew. I pray for God help in creating a clean, new heart in me — all for His Glory.

That is one of my favorite songs. I can hear it over and over. I am disappointed that we do not use it in our Church during Lent in the last few years. When I hear or sing that song I can feel the power of the Holy Spirit within me. Thanks for reminding me about it.

I read Nouwen’s “In the Name of Jesus” my junior year of college and have re-read it through the years when I need to be reminded that of what leadership really looks like. I am an avid student of Henry’s. It all started about 16 years ago when my wife gifted me “The Return of the Prodigal” shortly after I gave my life to Jesus. I have used that
book, “Inner Voice of Love”, and “Life of the Beloved” as pillars for Pater Noster Ministries.
It is a ministry of inner healing prayer focused on the renewal in mens’ heart of their belovedness in the eyes of the Father. It is a ministry based out of my home in Custer, South Dakota. I have worked with men all of the country, Canada, and Europe.
Praying that this study and our discussion will bear much good fruit during this Lenten
season for all of us!

I visited Croatia in October 2012-Medjugorje. Your country is beautiful. This is my first time to join a Lenten Book reflection group. I feel called by God to participate in such a large community of believers who will help me draw even closer to our Lord and Blessed Mother and each other as Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

I share a similar background and so appreciate Nouwen’s teachings. I’m also looking forward to insight gleaned from “friends” around the world.
I live in Illinois….by way of Texas. This is my first blog with Henri Nouwen, but I have been reading his books for years. I am also in the medical profession and have been working to practice God’s presence both at home and in the workplace. It is my prayer to become more present with my family and my patients during this Lenten season.
I, too, live in the heart of Central Texas. My husband and I farm. I have recently retired, have always been an avid reader of all of Henri Nowen’s Books, received much healing through his journey, and want to continue my journey with Henri.
This is my first online Book discussion, which I am so happy to have joined, so I can read and share Henri’s passion with other, like minded Spiritual People. I am thrilled to be here!

My name is also Ruth and I live in North Texas. To avoid confusion with the other Ruth from Texas, I will call my self RA from North Texas. I have been retired for 14 months and my husband for 19 months. We have two adult children. Like Ruth from the “heart” of Texas, my professional career was in health care. This is my first time to participate in a blog and to participate in a Henri Nouwen event.
